Food security/insecurity is a critical concept in the food garden and farm movement. Over the last hundred years, food production in the U.S. has become increasingly industrialized. Large corporations have leveraged control over agriculture, which impacts which foods are grown, how and where food is grown, and how food is distributed into communities. These food systems impact soil fertility, global warming, animal welfare, and labor rights and human welfare. As a result of this centralization, the U.S. has large population areas lacking quality food, or "food deserts." Agricultural industrialization has also lead to degraded and unsustainable environment for food production globally.
