MLA Citation Guide (8th edition): Other Formats

An introduction to the new (April 2016) edition of the MLA citation guide. The new Guide has introduced many new features to this widely used bibliographic style.

Miscellaneous Formats in MLA Style

1. Editorial in a newspaper:  

Newcomb, Steven. "Religious Racism in US Indian Law." Editorial. Indian Country Today,

2. Government publication:

3. Television or radio program:

Format Note: TV or radio programs include

  • the title of the piece
  • the name of the narrator
  • the name of the program (italicized like a book title)
  • the broadcast date
  • the date you accessed the program

4. DVD:
     Myths and the Mound Builders, directed by Graham Shedd. PBS Home

Video, 1998.

     It's a Wonderful Life, directed by Frank Capra.1946. Republic, 2001.

     Serenity, directed by Joss Whedon. 2005. Universal Studios, 2009.

Format Note: A DVD includes

  • the name of the item (italicized like a book title)
  • the director (if known)
  • the original year of issue (if known)
  • the studio
  • the date of the current release

5. TV episode on DVD:

6. TV episode on a streaming service:

Format note: Include

  • the name of the performer
  • title of the song, if applicable
  • the title of the CD (italicized like a book title)
  • the record label
  • the date of the current release

9. Dissertation:
      Hadja, Yvonne P. "Mary's River Kalapuyan: A Descriptive Phonology."

Dissertation, Portland State U, 1976.

Format note: An unpublished dissertation is treated differently than a book in the MLA format. The title is in quote marks, followed by "Dissertation", the name of the university, and the year. Remember that University is abbreviated to "U".

10. Online video, video podcast, and web television :

  • the name of the poster
  • the title of the post: note that the words are capitalized exactly as they appear in the original post
